Turtles have a slow metabolism. Energy consumption is not a problem for alligator snapping turtles as they can go a year without food. They move very slowly and alot of times algae is able to grow on them with no problem in the wild. Having deep water will not decrease the life span when you consider this turtle is living in maybe 1-2 feet of water and in the wild they live in 15-30 feet deep water.

@tonyagrestic You probably had a turtle that basks. Turtles like this have to heat up in the sun to help restore energy so you need a good uv light otherwise they can get sick and die like plants .Some breeds are complete aquatic but there are very few.

You can use a tall aquarium. Don't worry they won't drown. they live in lakes 25 ft deep. They like to hide so you need structures in the water like fake logs or ships. I don't recommend fake plants as some turtles will eat them. When you get them young, they eat mostly meat but in juvenile and forward they become omnivores. You need a constant supply of feeder fish. Stay away from goldfish because they can be toxic. I recommend rosy reds. pm me for breeder's site.

The alligator snapping turtle is an ambush predator. They have a tongue that flicks around like a lure. They have small powerful necks, whereas the commons have long necks for snatching prey. The commons bask so you need uv lights. The alligators are easier to take care of because they do not leave the water except to nest. That being said, they eat alot. Adults can go a year without food. They absorb 20 percent of their oxygen through their skin so clean water is a must.

yes. the air pump has been removed, it was strictly for show but it was making to much condensation and the water was also running off the glass.
