The festival originates in the ancient cult of Mithras, which was followed mainly by the ancient Roman legions. The sacrifice of bulls in honor of the god Mithras was a staple of Mithraic rituals. Mithras was a patron of soldiers and weaponry, and his worship was said to bring good fortune in combat to those who paid the proper homage.
