As of June 20, 2012, there is still a possibility it may happen. After the city withdrew support for the light rail and decided to back a bus system instead, private investors took on the light rail project. The federal government is also still willing to fund the project if some requirements are met. That's all I know at the moment.

From what I read on the M-1 Rail website, they just got $25 million in federal grant support for the light rail circulator project this past January, so I think that the light rail development will take place (which will be excellent for the Michigan community and residents. Buses aren't enough nowadays). I can't believe there are no local trains there. Here in Chicago, we only have trains that run above ground (elevated), and I wish we had a light rail system here.

That's what I meant. They cancelled the LRT and it's going to be a bus.

the M1 light rail from downtown to New Center will be funded. Now that there's a regional transit authority, there are plans to have rapid transit along Woodward, Gratiot and Michigan and others in a dedicated lane. It just will be a bus instead of a train.

Can't wait for this project to manifest. I believe this is a great move for the City of Detroit.
