Whats the difference if I were to say "Me gusta comer el pollo" as opposed to "A mi gusta comer el pollo?" And the difference if I were to say "Maria le gusta caminar" as opposed to if I were to insert the "A" in it.

You cannot leave out the indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, etc,) at all, ever. YOu CAN leave out the a mÃ, a tÃ, a él, etc... That is for additional emphasis or clarity. Your final example MUST have the "a Maria" to be grammatical. THe me, te, le, etc. means a + whomever, to me , to you, to him, to her something is pleasing

Hey, this is Erin Matthews (Anders). Thanks, Mr. Jolley, for this great explanation! I am teaching this to my Spanish 1's right now and they just are not getting gustar. So, on Monday I am going to show them this to offer a different explanation from someone who taught me! Thank you for the resource and for an excellent video for us to use. :)

The explanation of "Ice cream is pleasing to me" is one of the two I have used, because the first two words in Spanish often mean "to me" in other contexts and it helps beginners to get it that the Spanish is somewhat backward from English. Then comes the question of whether 'me' in 'me gusta' is a direct or indirect object pronoun. If a direct object pronoun, then "Me gusta el helado." means, "Ice cream pleases me." Right? " A mi" it can be looked at as personal 'a' and a personal pronoun?
