Although this is a very short feature of almost 12 minutes in length, I feel that it is the most important documentarty/feature made in recent years. For those who know who Yulia Makhalina is or for those who have never heard of her, this is your chance to find out about one of the most important ballerinas in Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet history.***For me, the most signifcant moment in the entire video is at the 6 minute 17 second part when another great person in Kirov/Mariinsky history, Gennady Selyutsky , says these words that describe why Yulia Makhalina is so imortant,"There is no other like Yulia. There has never been and never will be (one like Yulia). She is unique." This statement is lmost identical to the inscription on the statue that was built for the greatest basketball player ever, Michael Jordan . This large statue sits at the home of the Chicago Bulls basketball team where Michael Jordan played, it says "The best there ever was. The best there ever will be." For one of the most knowledgeable ballet experts, Selyutsky to make a statement that parallels the greatest basketball player ever, is very important in my opinion.** This entire feature centers around a historic event in Kirov/ Mariinsky ballet history, the one and only gala evening for Yulia Makhalina. The date was February 22, 2009. In this feature, we learn that Makhalina might have been blessed with a great career, but events in her life, carried on by evil people, have given her great hardships and have made her life a struggle. Despite all her emotional sufferings, she has been able to withstand the treachery and has come out as not only a great ballerina, but a great human being that deserves great respect.***This feature shows fragments of many of the ballets that she performed, Don Quixote , La Bayadere , Swan Lake , Le Corsaire , Cinderella , Anna Karenina with Konstantine Zaklinsky , the Young Man and Death with Igor Zelensky , Red Giselle , Paquita , Mata Hari and Two on a Swing with Igor Kolb . Selyutsky was the only personal coach that two of the Kirov Ballet's most famous dancers had at the theatre, Faroukh Ruzimatov and Igor Zelensky . Both men danced regularly with Makhalina .***In preparation for the Makhalina Gala , Yulia is shown rehearsing Raymonda with Selyutsky assisting. Both worked as a team in preparing the program. Yulia is shown performing Raymonda , Le Corsaire , Red Giselle and Two on a Swing, all from her Gala Evening. A brief look is given to Makhalina's future as a coach, when she coached Ana Sisoeva and Ivan Kozlov in the Legend of Love adagio, which was performed in her Gala.***The famous photogrpaher, Nina Alovert , and personal friend of Yulia, came to see this historic evening and gives much insight about Yulia. Yulia also discusses the importance of Vladimir Romanovsky , the choreographer of Mata Hari . Yulia is shown rehearsing with Romanovsky and performing Mata Hari.***It may be necessary to pause the video to be able to read the subtitles. Hearing is much faster than reading, so you may have to pause often.

Makhalina is so special to me. She was the first Mariinsky ballerina I saw live and my very first Nikiya, and since then I have never seen a better interpreter of the role. Fedotov was conducting that night and Yulia had to replace the injured Lopatkina. I will never forget that magical performance. I only wish I had seen her in many other ballets, especially in Raymonda.

@Lidewijke I see now in the comments of the second part of this video that she danced it last year as well. Good for her, but I wish she'd (be allowed to) perform more..

I was quite shocked to see today that she has danced Aegina in Spartacus on the 8th of July. Shocked because I didn't expect it at all, but I'm glad for her! Do you know if she danced this role before?

Is "Volodya" a diminutive form of "Vladimir"?

i hardly see her name in the playbills nowadays :-(
why is this happening!!
she is such a great dancer
superballetlover 1 year ago
@superballetlover You never see her on playbills because her career as a dancer on the Kirov Mariinsky stage is currently finished. She still is listed as a principal dancer, but Yuri Fateyev has no intention of letting her dance on the Mariinsky stage. She performs elsewhere, such as perfroming in several theatres in Germany last month as Mata Hari.
russianballetvideo 1 year ago
@superballetlover She goes to rehearse inside the Mariinsky Theatre several times each week, so you can always find her at her home theatre, but current management will not let her dance again. If management changes, everything might change.

My first impression of Kirov was Makhalina's Paquita on Kirov classics. When she made her entry en pointe, the entire room (my own room) lit up. Clive Barnes as quoted finally put words in how I felt: she danced like a duchess on vacation. Ever since I have been handing out copies of Kirov Classics DVD as holiday gifts so everybody could watch her. She dances like no one is watching. The Guillem clones after her are all too self-congratulatory about their long legs and modern coolness.
