Nice looking setup...just a note If anyone has a drum and even fills it half way with material it will get heavy and hard to spin so small amounts of compost the hand drive is OK, for anyone thinking they want a 55 gallon drum half full I can tell you from trial and error a small crank will not be easy to turn. Still like the compost system he built here it is VERY nice! Thanks for posting the video :)
I like your idea of attaching the offset handle directly to the handle. To answer your question as to why he didn't do this though is really simple: because he was capable of making a more complex mechanism.
That would work, also. His system is geared down so it's super easy to turn (handle directly on the rod would be a 1:1, but I suspect it'd work just fine, too).
@underoath4177 when a compost barrel is full and ready, it's very hard to turn by hand, im 25 y/o and even for me it's pretty daunting task to do twice a week so you can imagine how hard it is for a little older man..
Great design! Congrats!

nice, although i think bike chain might work better, mainly due to rubber harden after been exposed to UV

@soilfit That is what I was going to point out. I was going to say it needs a bigger cog for bigger weights.
