OKEH 4495 - played by the composer

Note that this is an actual recording from 1921, not a piano roll.

  • There's a real delicacy and subtlety to Johnson's playing- sadly too many contemporary proponents of stride piano seem to think that the trick lies in playing as loud and as fast as possible.

  • I have the original 78 and it plays just as beautifully

  • Thanks so much for this!-- especially meaningfull for me, as it was recorded on the very day my dad was born (October 18, 1921).

  • Awesome :D, I had been trying to find this recording for years :D

I watched a documentary on the "Performance" channel called "300 Years Of The Piano" and in the programme, this particular version was featured in it, when various people were talking about the old dance halls in New Olreans, etc, during the early 20th Century :)

Thank you so much for uploading this, top rating and added to faves :)

  • Great!
