There are lot of mistakes you can make when packing, especially if you have young children that want to take everything. You know you want to avoid those fees, most airlines have them now, for checking your luggage. You can have your carry on, rolly, and a backpack each. You might find that you don't need to check luggage.

However, your kids would want their special things. Even older kids will still maybe want a little snugly while they are going away. So if you want to pack with your kids, I recommend having a pile of definites, maybe's, and even the no's which even they would not want, but they get to feel like they are discarding something.

Trying to keep a minimal amount of things with you is incredibly important. And remember that if you are going to visit Grandma or Grandpa, there is going to be presents. So you want a little extra space in your luggage to be able to take them home, as well.

Kids do like to over-pack. They feel they need to take everything they own with them, even if its for a weekend trip. So remember to help them decide for themselves what they need and what they don't need. It helps them feel in-charge of a situation that they might feel uncomfortable about otherwise.

Another mistake people often make is mis-judging how heavy their luggage is if they are planning to check it. As you know, a lot of airlines now charge oversize fees. And there are luggage scales that you can buy at home to make sure that you don't think that your luggage weighs less than it does. That is a good purchase.
