  • Thank you for your honest opinion, Eskalowisk. But nowhere in your opinion I see ONE thought about the livelihood and the living of the campesinos. It is my feeling you rather stay ignorant and just want to evict or shoot all of them. Just because they stand in the way of the people who want to make big profits. You must know that Tranquilino Favero owns 100.000 or even more hectares? And that most of the campesinos only own 5 hectares, if they are lucky. Do campesinos have the right to live?

  • Is the power of money the ONLY ethics that should survive in Paraguay. Esk says that property is holy, but isn't it time that we really really really start thinking about how to prevent that Money corrupts everything. Don't the campesinos in san pedro and elsewhere have the RIGHT for healthy food, healthy air and water and for a place to live and grow their vegetables, raise their cattle? Soy expansion cost the migration of tens of thousands of people. Please think about that also.

  • Thank you for keeping this discussion polite! I know that in San Pedro there is a big drug maffia, I know that some sintierras sympathise with Chavez and Cuba. I don't know everything about the history of Brasilian farmers. I DO know that more then 90 percent of soy export comes from farms with MORE than 100 hectares (not the majority of the farms, but of the quantity) (like mr favero). A lot of Brasilian small soy farmers in Par are not very rich, but even then MUCH richer then the campesinos

  • The Brasilian colonists didn't start from zero. They brought in a lot of money into an area of very very poor people. They didn't use that money to support these people, but to put pressure on them to sell there land, to run around armed, to deforest, to pollute and to corrupt any official who would DARE to stop these big farmers. Just listen to the words of Claudia Russell (the big spokeswoman of the soyfarmers), her total arrogance and her threats of picking up the weapons.

  • Thanks for these remarks: but they are very onesided too. A lot of property was illegally obtained, but has been made regular now. The constitution still makes it impossible that foreigners should acquire land (I am NOT talking about brasiguayos who are paraguayan citizens). It is also a fact that the soy farmers are supported by...Colorado, which still has a majority in Congress, Fiscalia, and perhaps press. Colorado has always been extremely servant to the Big Money.

  • A minority of the campesinos indeed have sold their land to soy farmers, mostly out of desperation. A lot of the soyfields were illegaly obtained by the soyfarmers: a lot of times they don't even have property papers to show. A lot of the sin tierras are also the youngest generation that wants to obtain a little piece of land of a few hectares for their own future family. The Paraguayan land reform laws and constitution gives them that right. But we all know Paraguay is a VERY corrupt country.
