A good thing to do is surround the island with torches, thus stopping any mobs from spawning

btw, if you skip the bottom block of a tree and cut down the 2nd and 3rd first you can jump on that bottom block to get a bit higher
helps a little since most trees grow just 1 block out of reach :P
