This segment was shot at the air conditioning facility at the University of Houston and features two my Drama Department friends, Jack Huff and Kathy Powdrell. Kathy is now one of the most successful high school drama coaches in the nation. No wonder she could make that bonk on the head look so realistic! For the explosion at the end we added a length of actual dynamite fuse to a flare and ignited flash powder for the explosion. Interestingly, neither campus security or any of the passing students seemed to give notice to our running around with what looked like real dynamite or the ensuing flash explosion!!
Good friend and fellow fan, Roy Bonario, owner of Houston's first comic store -- Roy's Memory Shop, was and is deathly afraid of heights, so when I told him he was going to have to do a fight scene on a catwalk twenty feet off the ground, he was more than a bit reluctant. I managed to get a close-up of him on the catwalk (look how hard he's holding on to the rail) and a long shot while Cap and the bad guy, Glenn Kessler, are fighting but that was enough for Roy. I doubled for him in the fight scene on the catwalk and then cut to him for the end of the fall. Most amazing of all was how I was able to wear his pants and shirt for the scene! Which poses the question: what was Roy wearing while I was doubling for him??!!
