Weve not had much luck of late when it comes to Eurovision success. In fact, the last time the UK shook things up at the continental cringe-fest was when Bucks Fizz ripped off those gym skirts back in 1981. (We know Katrina And The Waves won in 1997, but whatever, and isnt she Canadian anyway?). So could things change this year with the advent of Jade Ewen, who looks and sounds like an X Factor finalist, and even has her own tale of triumph-over-tragedy? The 21-year-old grew up on a council estate in east London as the primary carer for her family. Her mum is blind in one eye and has a rare auto-immune disease, which means she has to spend half of every month in hospital, while her dad was born blind and, following an accident, is now also partially deaf. Jade got a much-deserved scholarship to the famous Sylvia Young Theatre School, which is where her luck changed. Performing is a release from my everyday life. When I went to Sylvia Young, that was the real change in my life and when I thought it could happen and I must be alright.
