During my Christmas Vacation, I went to an antique mall in Franklin Indiana that I hadnt been to in nearly a year. Most of the records hadnt changed, so I grabbed just a couple 78's and headed for checkout. The lady who owns the place said 'Wanna see more records?'.

I didnt know when I said 'yes' that it would be costing me about 5 hours of my time and over $70. But boy, was it worth it.

What she showed me was a small, closed off concrete wall, concrete floor room in the basement which contained an estimated 5-7,000 78's. All from a single estate sale.

So returned the next morning at opening, and spent about 5 hours there going through every last record in the room. As I did so, The owner would cme down to chat with me (we had alot of great conversation aside from the world of records).

During these talks, she informed me that the family of the man whom owned these records had already picked through them, taking 'about 20 elvis records and a whole bunch of adult records and KKK stuff'.

Ugh. I felt stripped of all energy. But I am so glad I carried on sorting, as it would still end up being a payoff. This video is of just a few of those finds.

EDIT: i returned to this store exactly one year to the day later and it was gone :( Guess I wont have a chance to go through all those records again.

  • A few years ago I decided to collect hit songs from the 1940 to 1950 era. I used Whitburn's books to decide on titles. The search took me to Hymes

  • @jwferman Dick Haymes has a wonderful voice. Be sure to see my vid for "Ill buy that dream", one of my all time favorites.

  • Best nine minutes I've had for ages!. I'm off to Franklin, but I guess you've cleaned it out!

  • @78s4FR That was over a year ago. I usually went there every December during my christmas vacation. Id spend a week hitting antique malls all day. Sadly, i returned to this mall....where thousands and thousands of records had been when I left the year earlier....and it had shut down, Emptied out. I still have her old flier, Im hoping I can call the number and its still good, and can find out if she still has it all.

  • To play the 16" disc you need two portable record players and you use the needle from one player and the turntable on the other.

There's a video on Youtube on how to do this.

    Hope this helps.

  • @jaworskij Thanks. This vid was so long ago, But I dont take it down because I still get great comments. Ive had a dozen cool record shopping trips, including one where I drove out of state but got about 1500 records....but I never made a vid as my camera died that very day. One day Ill get a proper 16" player, but Ill look for that vid in the meantime.

  • The #2 hit I'll Buy That Dream debuted Sept 8, 1945 and was on the charts for 13 weeks; it was a duet with Helen Forest. Dick Haymes was born Sept 13, 1916 in Buenos Aires - he passed away Mar 28, 1980. He performed with the Harry James, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey orchestras. He had a radio show with Helen Forest in the mid-40s. Other songs by Dick that were more popular are: 1) You'll Never Know, 2) It Can't Be Wrong, 3) Little White Lies and 4) Long Ago (and far away).

  • You should visit 78rpmcommunity (dot) com to see what other 78rpm collectors are up too...

  • Everyone should have a discovery like this - it's good for one's soul and so much fun to show off to other collectors. (I found a mint promo copy of the original Bandstand Boogie by Les Elgart in a shop around 1984 for a dollar- went through 4,000 for 70 records) I am still buying 78s on occasion, so cheers to you for the find!
