Presenting some fabulous 8mm color home movies of the Bloomquist family's trip to Europe aboard the SS United States in 1964! Mr. Bloomquist was serious about his family films, and apparently traveled with lighting equipment sufficient to shoot interiors of their Tourist Class Stateroom, the ship's gymnasium (for a very amusing workout), and even the kids cavorting in the indoor pool. Even niftier, he edited the footage with homemade titles, and selected the accompanying music which came with the film on a reel-to-reel audio tape. Although there's some audio distortion here and there, I must say, I couldn't have chosen the tunes better myself! The film has a total running time of over 20 minutes, so I've cut it into two parts for YouTube. Enjoy Note: 05/30/10: Having some quality issues with Part Two, but it will be up as soon as it's satisfactory!

  • The groovy music gets me everytime. Great Vid!

  • @tolstoy67 Me, too! And we can thank Mr. Bloomquist for the selections!

  • I wonder where Bloomquist Junior is today. He sure is packing it in at the Bon Voyage party! But, then again, that food looked pretty good. The BIG U had NMU's finest aboard.

  • @TheKMG365 I've always wondered what happened to the families and their heirs in these home movies. It's a shame that they end up being sold at estate sales etc., but at least they're there to be rescued!

  • Thank you so much for posting it! It brings back the excitement of a transatlantic, and gives a peek at the S.S.U.S.

  • what a way to sail at sea. i wish ships today had this feel.

  • Thanks for posting! Wow! What a nostalgia trip, the trains, NYC traffic and city scenes. The spotless SSUS? Just beautiful!

  • When they let non-passengers onto the ships for Bon Voyage parties! That was always nice....and a time gone by, along with these ships.

  • Absolutely delightful.... the Dining Car on the New York Central, the footage of Manhattan traffic, one of the American Export liners, the box from Schrafft's in the cabin during the Bon Voyage Party! A wealth of period imagery, worth repeated viewing. Thank you for posting this!

  • Great video!
