The best way to do it is let the runner establish. How do you tell? Once it starts to bloom and even bear fruit, it's ready to be cut off from the main plant. The newer growth will now draw nutrient from the newly-established 'mother plant'.

My plant made a runner, hanging in the air before i got a chance to pot it, and it had a flower before the mother plant did! ps the runner is still hanging there after like 3 months, still making its strawberries before the mother plant!!!!! lol

@johnathanyang ... Sounds like the baby is going to be a better producer than it's Mommy. Good luck. We lost a few plants this year from the drought, we moved them to a patch on the land. Now I wish that we kept them here in the pots.

My plants had strawberries first and then had runners. I have recently planted the runners but i don't know when to cut them off from the mother plant.

@KungFuMisty ... I give mine a little time to establish a root system. Usually you can tell if you GENTLY tug them and they stay put. Then I just cut them off the main plant. Thanks for watching, and good luck with your strawberry plants.
