From composition to improvisation, from solo work to multiple musicians, from recording to location work and installation, Barnaby's body of work is difficult to catogorise neatly. For one thing, it is seldom "just music", as a strong sense of place and of surrounding is an important part of any performance or event Barnaby organises. Perhaps the best way to sum it up is with his own dictum of attempting complex results with simplicity. This seems to be accompanied by an intense curiosity, as improvisation and chance are also majour elements. The few recordings he has released are just the tip of his body of work, as he tends to favour live performance.
