@mdirtydogg No, he shouted "Voetsek!". It's a universal South African word for "bugger off". Usually shouting and making loud noises will make the elephant turn away. In this case, you can see the guys were retreating for some time before the charge, and the shot was taken at the last moment. The guy didn't shoot earlier, because elephants often do mock charges. This was not one of them.

Now, before you fire a flak of insults: I actually work in conservation in Africa, and I make an offer here to take one person who is seriously interested on a trip to the bush, on foot in dangerous game territory, learning about what REALLY happens on the ground - and no, it's not Animal Planet down here: animals are not smiling pets, you make a mistake, you're dead. But it IS fascinating. Interested in animals and conservation? That's a chance for grab.
