Nicholas, a young man with autism, is rock climbing with Aidan. Dr. Fries and Ali help Nicholas understand what comes next. Soon, Nicholas enjoyed his experience of climbing and really loved his experience coming down!
As Nicholas was becoming more familiar with the process, Dr. Sally Burton-Hoyle asked Nicholas' mom some questions.
They key to Nicholas' learning is having someone have content expertise and a keen knowledge of how Nicholas learns. If one person doesn't have the content knowledge for any subject, be it academic or activities outside of the school day, then a content expert AND a someone who really knows Nicholas need to work as a team to help Nicholas learn.
The glory of working with Nicholas, as you will see here, is that (if everything is done correctly, by the content expert and the "Nick expert") it doesn't take long when Nicholas requires less support and intervention, since he becomes engaged in the activity, in his own right.
