"Madman Across the Water" written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin originally was recorded by Elton John for his LP, Tumbleweed Connection; however, it was excluded from the album and re-recorded for the following album titled after it, Madman Across the Water. This is the version presented here with Davey Johnstone on guitar in place of Mick Ronson who had played on the original recording. Madman Across the Water , Elton John's fourth LP, released 5 November 1971 by MCA Records, reached #8 in early 1972 on the Billboard 200 and is available on CD on the Island label.

  • Dear Catman, I don't know if you put this together or not but if you did Thank you. What a tribute to one of the best singer song writers ever born. I still remember listing to this in "our" basement as a young teen and being as amazed as I still am today. Once again thx.

  • @1brotz2 Wow! You are correct about the timeline, that is a mistake. I would thank you for the correction if you phrased it properly, but for you to attack me personally is inappropriate. Please TRY to practice civility, your hero did.

  • @connectoid REAGAN was a VERY SUCCESSFULL ACTOR and PRESIDENT of screen actors guild YOU ARE AN IDIOT !and a FOOL

  • @connectoid Learn some HISTORY / Timelines THIS was writen in 1971 9 YEARS BEFORE ONE OF OUR GREATEST PRESIDENTS

RONALD REAGAN HAD BEEN ELECTED ... YOU STUPID LIB IDIOT !

  • This song was written about Ronald Reagan, who in the 1980s was escalating the arms race with the Soviet Union. Europeans where convinced he was mad, hence the title line. The line "a fool had a good part in the play, if it sold would we be here today?" echoes the thinking that if Reagan had been a more successful actor, he would not have entered politics.

  • @hockeybooks - see if you can find the version with Mick Ronson playing guitar. It's also amazing. (Pre-David Bowie/Spiders from Mars era) Recorded before this version, but it was not the one chosen back in the day. It's out now on a compilation Elton John album. WOW.
