bette midler did not make up this idea all herself. she saw Candy Darling as a mermaid in a wheelchair (singing!) in the play "Heaven Grand in Amber Orbit." The play was written by Jackie Curtis and came out in '68. of course bette lived and worked in NY then.

Oh please like there wasn't some queen in Gaga's camp that saw Bette Midler doing Dolores Delago the toast of Chicago and planted the mermaid idea! And this is not a slam on GG. She is fierce but her act and persona is an amalgam of the divas that paved her way - Cher, Bette, Madonna, Grace Jones etc. (Grace was rocking Phillip Treacy headgear when Stefani Germanotta was crapping in her pampers.) Next we'll see GG wearing a banana skirt a la Josephine Baker! Young queens recognize don't hate!
