@MrPhilosophicalpanda Come to think about it, you're probably right, it really serves no purpose to start comparing eras. You simply perform and beat whoever is in front of you at the time. My bad in making that comparison. Both are/were outstanding athletes.

Interesting the way Emil Zatopek and Haile Gebreselassie were/are both always smiling and happy seeming. Coincidence?

@brianclough In his prime, Zatopek may have been more dominant than Gebrselassie, but Gebrselassie's longevity, persistence, and versatility will probably never be matched. During Gebrselassie's career, he has broken 26 world records.

None other like him... a legend, straight up !

With due respect to Haile Gebrselassie, I think Zatopek remains the greatest ever long distance runner. To run and win his 1st marathon in 2:23 was simply outstanding given it was just a minute off the world mark. He also won the 1948 Olympic Gold in the 10km, his second race over that distance. The man was truly great. 5000, 10000 and marathon Golds in a single Olympics! I doubt this will ever be emulated.
