Bunnies can get very depressed when a rabbit they were bonded with dies. I don't think it's that common for them to outright die of loneliness, but they definitely recognize the change and react.

Some people allow the surviving rabbit to sniff the body of the dead one. It may sound weird or gross, but it can help the other rabbit to understand what happened and as long as the rabbit who died didn't have any contagious illness, it's harmless
