He survived because he never hit the turbines, he got jammed in the intake port. And his helmet destroyed the engine, preventing it from pulling him in any further. After the ordeal, he was able to walk two steps, before blacking out. He survived; miraculously with moderate injuries, and is still alive today.
He survives because his helmet was ripped off and destroyed the engine's compressor blades, killing the suction of the engine (even though it was turned off as soon as he was sucked in).

I seen this on "Worlds most amazing videos" and the reason he survived was because his helmet jammed the engine and one of the other crew noticed that there was something wrong so he told the pilot to shut the engine down. Obviously the pilot knew anyway and shut it down before the crew could tell him.
