  • Life is short. we must not be wasting it fighting over outr countries. just relax and listen to the music.

Das Leben ist kurz. dürfen wir nicht vergeuden es im Streit um outr Ländern. einfach nur entspannen und Musik hören.

    now we can both understand.

  • @stevenm820 i cant even begin to tell you how wrong you are. hitler didnt make this the national hymn. it was germanys national hymn since the early 20s. and west germany has never stopped using it. only the eastern part was forced to use a different hymn.

is it so hard to read up on history before telling other people incredibly wrong things.

  • sounds like the German anthem

  • 1990 in the same way the hymn and the 3. stanza was declared the official hymn of the re-united Germany.

  • After WWII the melody stayed the same in Western Germany, while Eastern Germany got a new hymn.

Because the nazis misused the first verse and also because the geographical borders of Germany in this verse weren't correct any-more, the western German federal President and Chancellor decided in an official note, that the 3 stanza of the "Lied der Deutschen" should be the only sung version of the hymn.

  • The nazis misused the first verse "Germany over all" as a sign of national supremacy, while the original intention of that line in 1841 was an appeal to unite all German states.

Meanwhile Austria couldn't use the same hymn, as the victory powers after WWI forbid with the treaty of St. Germain a unfication of Austria and Germany, after the first democratic Austrian Republic constitution called the country German-Austria and had a clear Intention for an unification.

  • When Austria changed from Monarchy to Republic in 1918, they obviously couldn't keep a hymn with Lyrics about an Emperor.

As Germany also had a hymn about their emperor, sung to the melody of today's english national hymn, they needed something new too.

So in Germany the "Lied der Deutschen" was made the official hymn in 1922.

  • correction: not 1897, 1797.

During the Napoleonic wars Austria declared itself an Empire in 1804, Archduke and Emperor of the HRE Francis II named himself now Emperor Francis I, to show, that with the new Austrian Empire starts a new count of emperors.

In 1806 the HRE was officially dissolved, but Francis kept the Hymn for his new Empire.

1841 Hoffmann v. Fallersleben wrote new lyrics to the melody, "Das Lied der Deutschen" a call for the German states to unite.

  • Haydn first wrote a hymn for the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation.

Later he took this hymn as basic theme for this string quartett.

When he wrote the hymn in 1897, there was no Austrian Emperor, as there was no Austrian Empire.

There was the Archduchy of Austria part of the Holy Roman Empire, and Archduke Francis of Austria was also the elected Emperor of the whole HRE.

As Haydn called it the emperor hymn, it's obviously ment for the emeror of the HRE not the Achduke of Austria.

  • Lovin' it :)
