  • I love it when Matt Lauer gets into books. You can tell he reads them.

  • This is so fascinating to read you guys talking about this. It was a great segment and rather in depth for the Today Show. I think this was Matt Lauer's best interview.

  • That's right. Mittie died of typhoid a couple of hours before Alice succumbed. He left Alice with her aunt Bamie and headed out west. Emotionally, Teddy remarrying Edith was good for him, but he was completely ill equipped to deal with Alice. Because he couldn't bear to speak about her mother, Alice suffered.

  • Also, if I remember right, TR's mother died the same day (or close to it) as his first wife...that's what led him to go out west and become a rancher in the mid-1880's... to deal with his grief.

  • I'm not surprised Alice Roosevelt believed that about her father, Teddy. Ted absolutely refused to speak about Alice's mother to her. She died when Alice was two days old. Ted remarried to Edith 2 years later.

  • The comment of George W. Bush at the end was quite telling.

  • awesome video!

  • What a hoot, Alice Roosevelt was. It is sad to see such interesting people eclipsed by history. Or is it? Many of the interesting people who fill our newspapers today will be forgotten tomorrow but the policies that affect our lives, government really, continue to matter.

  • why is the first Lauer video posted separately?

  • I think I'm glad I was raised on a farm, playing Indians in the woods.
