Established in 1940, It was the largest of the German concentration camps, consisting of Auschwitz I (the Stammlager or base camp); Auschwitz II-Birkenau (the Vernichtungslager or extermination camp); Auschwitz III-Monowitz, also known as Buna-Monowitz (a labor camp); and 45 satellite camps.
Up to 3million people died in these camps.(estimation revised to 1.1million recently)
Liberated by the Soviet troops the 27th january in 1945.

There is one moment, one image where I just about lose it when it comes across the screen. At 3:45, Several large trees are center frame and the video is panning upwards over the image and there are three clouds that appear as spirits moving upwards. Very powerful.
