Hellcat start up problems?

I read somewhere that oil tends to pool in the cylinders from the last flight. When the engine restarts, that oil gets burned off. This is completely normal for radial engines.

@retromagazin This is very common for a big radial engine to be puffing out white smoke. There is nothing that pilot did that is wrong in this video, he did not prime it to much. Priming refers to priming the engine with fuel. Given there are pre oilers which will circulate oil throughout the engine. These are common nowadays in warbirds as it ensures proper lubrication is pumped throughout the cylinders before engine start which means less wear and tear on the engine at start up.

@retromagazin wrong, had he primed it to much at initial start up you would have seen black smoke coming out of the stacks, the white smoke you are seeing is the oil that has been collected in the bottom cylinders. Because of the radial engines design with cylinder being in a circle the bottom cylinders collect oil. Also before starting a radial that has not been started in a while you should walk the prop through to avoid a hydro lock situation where it is possible to damage the engine.

Perfectly routine big round engine start.
-
@retromagazin It has nothing to do with priming. It is just residual oil that is being burnt off from the bottom cylinders.
-
@PSNgregiskool Woah I did not say that.
-
@PSNgregiskool That gets most of the oil out but the cylinders are still wet with oil and it take a bit of warm up to dry them out especially if you've OVER PRIMED it.

if that war machine dies itll make me feel bad XD

If a radial engine sits for a length of time, like overnight, it will collect enough oil in the lower cylinders to cause a liquid lock. If you don't pull the prop through by hand to clear the oil and simple jump in and crank the engine with the starter you can blow the lower cylinders clean off the engine and through the cowling. Bad day. Even after you clear the liquid lock the engine will smoke up a storm when you do start it. If it don't smoke then something is wrong.
Hi Nice vid,
but it's normal for a radial engine. They all create big clouds of burned oil when they start

point being, he primed it too much
