interestingly, since the release of snow leopard spotlight lags like hell, even crashes if i have an external hard drive attached and turned on.

That's not normals. Spotlight works as before for me on all my Macs. You may want to set that external drive to not be indexed by Spotlight.

You can see the price right on the link shown in the video (I can't put links in YouTube comments). It is $20 retail, but Amazon usually has it for about $14.
