This video tells how and where Arkansas ballad singer Almeda Riddle began her 10 year stint of singing old ballads all over the country. In an informal manner, folk musician Starr Mitchell chats with Riddle about her singing tours and her commitment to preserving the past for the future.

Just glad to recall that I did have the opportunity to hear Almeda live when she sang briefly to those in the ball field stands that are adjacent to the old fair grounds at Heber Springs. Yes her style was most primitive, as she didn't care for voices that warbled or trilled such as the way it is for the country singers of today and those during her time. I'm sure she'd be aghast at what passes for some of the music to which many listen now.

I love this subject. In times when people flaunt "patriotism" in a blaring, militaristic way, here, folks, is the backbone of this great country. Owe so much to Alan and John Lomax, Burl Ives, Carl Sandburg, Pete Seeger, J.J. Niles, others. Granny Riddle was magnificent! Even a glance around the kitchen in the opening is a delight. (Her rooster song long predates Tex Ritter's.) -M.T.
