Collection of U.S. Navy PBM-5 flying boats.
They were serviced by seaplane tenders and had no wheels for landing.
They carried a crew of 11.
Enjoy the past. They were phased out
of Navy in late 1950's.

  • My first Duty Station was VP-31 NAS North Island.

I got to love & hate the P5s.

I wasn't there for long before I got orders for Fleet Intelligence (FOITCPAC) at NAS Alameda, but I was there long enough.

P5s were a deadly ASW hunter-killer with a great record but they were a pain in the ass to work on.

    VP-31 was a R.A.G. outfit and we handled P2s, P3s & P5s.

Our main mission was to transition Pilots from P2s and P5s to the P3 "Orions'.

Loved the "Orions"..one of the best aircraft ever built.

  • I served when the plane was the P5M Martin Marlin. Went aboard the Currituck, Sally Sound, & Pine Island a number of times. Flew out of Iwakuni, Japan with VP-50

  • I see your a fan of the mighty mariner.I'M re creating a 1/12th scale version of the P B M 5 three years in the making photo's like yours come in handy, thanks. If your interested go to RCU under forums then seaplanes, pbm im on the third page enjoy.
