Roan Mountain Hilltoppers complete in "Band" category and Bill Birchfield competes in "Fiddle" category at the 83rd Johnson County Old Time Fiddlers Convention on 22 August 2008. The selection performed are "Train 45 /Reuben's Train" and "Lost Indian". This band has been a regular for years at this convention. Cloggers joined in at the stage front. Held every year since 1925 somewhere in Johnson County, Tennessee this may be the longest running "old time" fiddlers convention in the southern Appalachians. For the last 17 years it has been held at the "Old Mill Music Park" in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee.
Thank You for this GREAT example of our Mountain Heritage! The Scotch-Irish are alive and well! King Billy's children/ Mountaineers Always Free! :D

I swear .. that announcer sounds all the world like Mr H. P. Van Hoy .. that well-loved founder & life-long manager (20s to the 60s) of the Union Grove, N.C., Old Time Fiddlers Convention. This band .. to my ear, anyways .. has one of the most-authentic, sweetest, genuine old-time sounds & rhythms that I've heard in some time. I'd travel some considerable distance .. in a force-10 gale .. to see em & hear em ...
