This installation is likely illegal, as it connects the grey (rain) water to the city drinking water piping. If both shutoff valves are open and the city water pressure drops, all taps will deliver grey water!
Better solution is *two* fill valves on the reservoir (one on each side) each with their own float. That is a safe setup because then grey (rain) water can't back-flow into the drinking water supply. You also can't make a mistake (open both valves) and flood the balcony. Great idea though!

What do you do in winter?
In winter we don't necessarily get really low temperatures but the ball valve means we can switch back to mains water. This will also be handy if it doesn't rain enough.

... A ball valve to allow us to switch back to mains water. Then there's an isolator on the existing plumbing that we can turn off the mains with.

The whole project cost about €100. It took around eight hours to do. We also put a spider cover in the top of the down pipe to prevent leaves going down the drain. The gutters needed to be cleaned too. We used a rain barrel, a shop bought rain barrel diverter to take water from the rain pipe, a home made plastic Perspex filter, a normal hose pipe fitting, a length of water hose pipe, some jubilee clips, a brass 90 degree bend to go round the corner, hose clamps along the wall, a ball valve to
