@taterye Pretty funny...he actually quit because of Mancini's fight with the Korean boxer...Cobb was the one who said "he did the boxing world a favor..." still funny. Later someone asked Cobb about a rematch with Holmes, and Cobb said he "didn't think Holmes' hands could take it." Warrior with a sense of humor for sure.

Hard to find a heavyweight fighter with more guts, and heart than Tex Cobb. Also had one of the best chins ever. Gotta love his humor and movie characters + one helluva a great kickboxer.

@76WestSports Lampley doesn't say things like that. He tries to make it exciting but both Merchant and Lampley just give their views regardless of how misguided boxers or HBO subscribers find them.

@bangitslo Say what you want, but Cosell was one of the reasons why boxing exploded during the 70s and early 80s. The contendor consisted of two other peoplke who made boxing explode in the 70s, Leonard (real boxing) and Stallone (movies). However, the contender was missing one other element from that era and that was Cosell, a defining voice.

@taterye It hurt boxing because once Cosell left, boxing's appearance on network tv began to disappear. People get a grip! Cosell tried to change the sport and became frustrated when he kept wasting trips to DC to testify on behalf of a federal commission which went nowhere. Also, Ali was being diagnosed with parkison and Leonard had to retire because of his retina. Cosell was close to both Ali and Leonard. Mix that with the Duk Koo Kim death and Arguello vs Pryor and you have a piss Cos.

My favorite boxing quote of all time came after this fight.
Asked about a rematch.
"I don't think his hands could take the abuse." On a possible rematch with Holmes.
"I wasn't talking to Holmes in there. Every time I felt like saying something to him I found it hard because he kept putting his left hand in my mouth."
During the fight Cobb
"Hey, you're a white guy, do something about this!" To the ref in the Holmes fight.
