Yeah, it's a cheap city. It's filled with poor ass people. Even the pricier parts of the city where the tourists go are cheap relative to other cities its size or bigger. E.g. cigarettes are 4 bucks a pack.
When you visit, of course you have to check out the French Quarter, but I also recommend the Marigny right nearby, in particular Frenchmen Street.
