Van Johnson and Stephen Rabow entertain Seattle on a "chomp-down-swallow kinda" Friday.

Here's the legendary Rock of the 80s, KYYX FM on August 26, 1983.

Even during the "peak" of the so-called New Wave in the U.S., only a handful of big city commercial stations played music like this in the late morning and afternoon: The Waitresses, EBN-OZN, Tim Scott, Europeans, Minor Detail, and The Pretenders' "Tattooed Love Boys."

Some of the radio spots on this recording are hilarious, including the New Wave-style ad for Dairy Farmers of Washington and the live spot for The Backstage Tavern in Ballard.

Like the man says: "Oodles of poodle strudel."

  • I still have two magazines they put out. I used to have their cassette, but an ex girlfriend snagged it. I'm still looking for at least a copy of it. I'm also looking for stickers, t shirts and sweat shirts from this station. Anyone want to get rid of there kyyx stuff email me at rodgerbruce69@ hotmail.com

  • Boy, The American Dairy Association was shameless even back in the early 80's.

  • Does anyone remember the last hour of KYYX and the explosion on the air when it all ended? Did anyone record that?????

  • @Praried0g - "it's in the mail" - that darn Seattle Sleaze District Post Office always was a bit, um, sticky...hmnn...it's only been, what, almost 30 years...should get to you any day now...

  • huh, so this is what my dad sounded like in 1983

  • This is so awesome- totally brings me back to jr. high, which would have been even worse without my favorite DJ, Mr. Rabow. Someone I know slammed the 80s as "the dark ages of music" and I felt like punching her- obviously she never listened to KYYX! Also thanks for including the commercials and visuals- hilarious!

  • @gimlee49 I love that tape.....you can get some info on some of them on pnwbands dot com, but not all of them are there

  • I remember this. I have all these cassettes of Seattle Radio AM+FM from 1983 and 1981.

  • Boy, do I MISS that station. I remember "Stephen Rabow's Unpopular Hit Parade" late weekend nights. There was an incredible dub house show on afterwards. And just in case Stephen Rabow is reading this, "Where's my Residents Towelette ???" You had the 'stupid box set' contest of which I won 1st AND 2nd place. LOL. Stevie Wonder's Dayglo vinyl set with sing along records in Braille. I'm still waiting! ha hhahhahah

  • Awwesome. I have a musice cassette from 1983 and I am wondering if any of the original groups are out there still|????
