My coworker - the safety officer of his model plane flying group - erred and managed to get caught on video showing what NOT TO DO! The model plane had lost an engine and was hard to control. Dennis survived with minor injuries. Alas, the plane did not.
I was given permission to upload this video to You Tube by the videographer - Steve Gill.
There are alternate views of the same crash on You Tube.

  • O my gosh at first I thought it was a real plane! LOL!! glad no one was hurt! :)

  • Sonya, I love your videos and after viewing one today I saw in the description WMM. I then realized you had used windows movie maker. So I searched for it on MY PC and made a movie of STILL photos for my friend Rick and Gina. Now, I just need to get a video camera and get some vids of my PETS uploaded! By the way, Dennis knows they made a mistake and I guess they were too busy trying to land the model plane to realize WHERE they were standing. :)

  • What a waist and how much of good luck for a fellow modellers.

    keep safety rulls tight !!

and say a thanks to God

  • oh crap did the prop hit him?

that sorta happend to my dad he took of with his aircore40 and he had to much right thrust and he couldnt get it to control left, and it went in the pit area the wing hit a guys shoulder and broke his super stearman wing , strut, and cabbane everyones ok in the end =P

  • The plane probably would've been alright if he'd gotten out of the way... it was going relatively slow and banking a bit, probably would've nosed in and flipped but been okay... his leg completely shredded that wing!

  • I don't know, but I will find out and respond. I won't be in contact with Dennis again till next week. I agree, it could have been a nasty accident with Dennis and pilot torn up and not the plane!

  • Personally I am just happy that the guys got away with it! it could have been a very nasty accident! what size engines were in the B25 by the way?. Believe me I am not being a critic just another concerned fellow flyer.

  • I also wanted to state that Dennis and the pilot were not on the runway. They were trying to land the plane on the runway but because it lost an engine and was difficult to control, they didn't quite make the runway. I'm not excusing him, but I believe they were concentrating on the plane flight (brain cramp moment) thinking it would make the runway. Both he and the pilot learned a valuable lesson the hard way. (stand behind the fence!).

  • I spoke with Dennis about this and he did say that they were supposed to be behind the safety fence while the plane was being flown. He's been involved in this hobby for years and is a very knowledgeable, responsible person. I believe they both (pilot and safety officer) were suffering from brain cramps that day.

  • Really lucky escape there! probably been said before but it was just as much the pilots fault, anyone on the ground should be standing behind the pilot, better still behind the safety fence you can see in front of the camera.
