Oracle's modified trimaran challenger for the 33rd America's Cup to be held February 2010. This monster state-of-the-art trimaran, constructed of space-age carbon fiber composites, has a mast height of over 190 feet, an overall length of 100 feet, and is 90 feet wide. It currently is one of the fastest sailboats on the planet and has flirted with speeds in the 40-50 knot range. Her mainsail is 6800 square feet, genoa is 6700 square feet, and her gennaker is 8400 square feet. The AC trimaran was hauled in October for modifications which included a shorter mast and the addition of a BMW Series-1 engine. More modifications are planned in November including the rigging of a hard wing-sail. According to Oracle, the wing towers 195 feet, and is reportedly the size of the wing on an Airbus 380. San Diegan Dennis Conner's STARS & STRIPES hard wing-sail catamaran was the first yacht to use the wing-sail concept in the 1988 America's Cup. Conner and crew beat New Zealand's huge 135-foot K-Class sloop in an historic best-of-three match off San Diego. The Oracle trimaran USA, using an 223ft. high hard-wing-sail mast configuration, beat the Swiss team Alinghy's AC catamaran February 2010 to win the America's Cup.

Tech winning != boring. Sorry, but Alinghi lost on the water. Sure it was only two races, but Alinghi was not competitive; too many mistakes on their part when Oracle made almost none. Not being in the starting box on race 2? Seriously? Did they not commit the SAME EXACT ERROR in race 1? You want to blame a boring race on someone, blame it on Alinghi.
The comments about money are just absurd. Do you honestly think Alinghi spent LESS money than Oracle and that's the reason they lost? Really?

Wouldn't that be the SAME "loophole" in the SAME rules that New Zeland used in their unsucessful 1988 challange?

It's always been about money!

They learned in that event that they could easily loose the cup and so selected a challenger that would guarantee their victory and continued possession. My hope is the deed of gift will be changed to force this to be an open competition with a challengers series culminating in a cup defense. The cup holder should provide the information regarding boat type and rules for the defense within 6 months of winning the cup. We'll see how it goes.

I understand anger about the cup but do you understand that Alinghi had highjacked it and were not planning a regatta to defend. The planned defense was going to be a joke against a hand picked opponent, not the beautiful display of a cup event we had in their first defense.

I thought this was supposed to be about sailing, not a 'most money' event. Shows how little I know.

@expose: the America's Cup is not about "regulated boats", that's Match Racing Circuits. Do you love the Mach Race? Not see the Americ'as Cup. It's about built de best boat. 160 years about that.

@SH1974 Yeah congrats Oracle for destroying the Americas Cup. If it were in regulated boats Alinghi and Team NZ would kick Oracles ass. The real losers are the fans of the Americas Cup.

Funny how the only people that like it are the yanks, Because they finally got it [The Auld Mug] back. Pity they had to find loopholes in the rules to do it.
Americas Cup is dead!!!!!
