  • For God's sake! Can't you see the catapult? The rails? Are you stupid or what?

Santos Dumont was the 1st and you all know that!

  • Maybe someone should explain you the difference between a dirigible and an airplane and teach you good manners!!!

  • The time and date of each of these flights, for all practical purposes, is irrelevant. Even the Wright brothers didn't care about "when" they flew, they were only concerned about "how" it flew. Whitehead was among the 8 or 9 individuals that "probably" got airborne prior to the Wrights, but nothing he and those earlier pioneers had anything that worked. By 10/1905, the Wrights had finally developed the world's first practical airplane, it wasn't until 10/1908 before anyone else matched them.

  • Wright brothers my FOOT. Gustave Whitehead, the way I see it, is clearly the first in powered filght. He made it into the newspapers one or two years before the Wright brothers, with atleast 10 witnesses to back him up. ATLEAST ten. So what is the smithsonian excuse? Errr..... they're all lying!

Nonetheless, a replica of Gustave's flyer was made on gas or carosine power and it flew just fine. In fact, it flew longer, faster, and all around better than the Wright flyer. WITHOUT a catipult.

  • very fitting music, I remember it from "Thr Aviator". Ace job mattelliono!

  • ..., and in order to do such amazing air feats, the plane would have had a lot of sustentation capacity. In other words, the plane should have had a great capacity to hold itself in the air. So it would be totally ILLOGICAL that the Wright plane have not had the capacity to take-off without external aid!! I doubt that the Wrights being the first men flying , but it is a fact that they were two of the greatest aviation pioneers and that that they didnt need a catapult to fly.

    I'm done

  • ...while at the same time most aviators in the world were struggling to stay airborne for just a few seconds (Dumont for example...). In 1908 they visited France and totally amazed Europeans with their awsome air performances, never seen before, including figure-eights. Even pioneer French aviators were totally impressed. So here comes my statement:

In order to get to that points, the Wrights should have been developing ther planes for years before 1908...I'll continue..

  • I would really like to clear that stupid catapult issue once and for all. That catapult was only made to shorten the take-off distance in order to have a safer take-off. Even the most powerful fighter jets of our today use catapults for the same purposes, and nobody doubts that they're totally capable of flying for what they do airborne. Same for the Wrights, who by 1905 were doing 40 minutes-long flights (very well registered by american media of that time) I'll continue on another...

  • @Verdelufe First one that accepted with word Wright.

  • I want everybody to know what happened to me: At video Wright Brothers First Flight & Wright Brothers First Flying Machine(PBS Nova) I was denied to continue posting my comments" Comments Pending Approval & Error Try Again" This is the powerful media with their Propaganda Machine telling where you should eat your grass, is this a free country or what. Can I like G.Curtiss & Europeans aviators and dislike the Wright Brothers. Anywhere the word Wright appear I am blocked. At YT you can't complain.

  • Nice !

  • Dumont started with "balloon" then first to put a proppeller in a ballon with some control called "dirigible" then " heavier than air" 14 Bis & Demoiselle they both flew 100 years ago and still fly today with his replicas. Dirigible has its merit too we have blimps all over the place.
