100 Other Lovers

Music video for "100 Other Lovers", the first single from DeVotchKa's new album 100 Lovers, out now. Directed by the wonderful Chloe Rodham.

Almost reminiscent of short animation films nominated at the Oscar Awards, DeVotchKa's "100 Other Lovers" uses stop-motion to depict the heart wrenching tale of a of a Babushka and her collection of birds. DeVotchKa utilizes a grand scheme of trickery through use of an upbeat, head-bopping melodic line accompanied by sad, woeful lyrics. "100 Other Lovers" is the title track of the band's new album, in stores now!

My interpretation: each bird is one of her past lovers, and as she nears the end of her life she's saying goodbye to all those memories. I like how each cage is opened by a special key, maybe corresponding to a particular era in her life? I guess the little orange bird, the first one she freed and the last one she says goodbye to, was her first lover. A sad but fond farewell :)
