If everybody was thinking like you we would still live in caves, running around with clubs.
-
The irony with your comment about DARPA is that we wouldn't be here commenting on a YouTube video on the Internet if it wasn't for research initiated by DARPA.

I suppose the car gains a character of its own, through its autonomy.
But the cheering is really for the people who gave it this autonomy, and made it so impressive.
Nice job, Stanford!

EVOLUTION, NOT REVOLUTION. I'm for a driverless acar but I realize that to do this, it has to occur incrementally because if there's a problem it'll be easier to diagnose. Already car companies like Mercedes-Benz is doing it thru its following pioneering innovations (from earliest to latest):
AntiLock Brakes,
Traction Control,
Electronic Stability Program,
Brake Assist,
4matic,
Distronic Cruise Control,
Active Body Control,
Pre-Safe Brake
and after 2010, Pre-Scan.

Needs mounted turrets.

@ bikertom98: Very well said!! Almost everything has it's origin in the military!

looks like the pike's peak Touareg with stuff on top.

how do you find a carreer in such a field?

I would love to watch this, but there is something a bit odd about cheering a driverless car to the finish line! Saying that I would be cheering as well though.
how awesome is that, very nice... make sure you check out the nova special on the grand challenge

Thanks for your nice comment. I've seen the Nova show and it was excellent. Of course, being there live for the event was a unique historical experience. The qualification runs at the California Speedway were a lot of fun, too. I hope DARPA sponsors something like this again soon. As a ham radio amateur television operator, I enjoyed capturing the video and transmitting it to other hams.
