A PRECIOUS idol from a famed temple in India is here in Singapore.
Temple leaders say this is the first time the idol from the 5000-year-old Chakkulathukavu Sree Bhagavathy Amman Temple in Kerala, has left India.
The idol, measuring about 1 ft by 1 ft, is of the Goddess Sree Bhagavathy Amman. For two days, the idol will stay at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Serangoon Road. On Friday night, it will be carried by a silver chariot procession to the Sri Vairavimada Kaliamman Temple in Toa Payoh, where it will remain until Sunday.
Devotees may take part in special prayers organised throughout the weekend at either temple. The prayers will be conducted by a group of 10 priests who accompanied the idol here, led by the temple's chief priest Radha Krishnan Nambudari.
The Chakkulathukavu Temple in India is well-known for being a pilgrim site for women devotees. Every year, about 1,000 Singaporeans visit the temple, said a temple trustee.
The visit this weekend was organised by the Singapore Malayalee Hindu Samajam.
