Killing more than 550 Californians, sending thousands to hospitals and testing the state's medical infrastructure as never before, a new virus changed our world two years ago. The H1N1 flu, first identified in Imperial and San Diego counties, led to widespread anxiety, the declaration of a public health emergency, and closed schools. H1N1 quickly spread nationwide and then around the globe, taking a heavy toll on people not usually susceptible to serious influenza. "The H1N1 Flu: California's Response" shows first-hand how California doctors and researchers who were on the front lines identified and responded to the pandemic, and how it was different from anything they had experienced before. Two survivors of the flu tell their story on how H1N1 nearly took their lives. This compelling documentary explains how an everyday sickness -- the flu -- can truly threaten life as we know it.
