Thero explains how the Dagoba/Stupa is being built.
In old Stupas only Yastiya, the main pillar
can be seen. The relics are kept inside
this. However, later our artists made the
stupa an art. It has a deep meaning right
now, which explains our path to nibbana.
For example when we reach the bottom
of the Stupa we only can see the
Chudamanikya (a gem) which is at the top
of stupa.
It represents the Nibbana. Art and
technology has been used to represent
complex ideas that helps visiter to find
the right path.

(detailed explanations
of all the parts of the Dagoba is omitted,
Some related info can be found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stupa )
If you observe the Stupa carefully and stay there for sometime your mind can be concentrated and make it peaceful.
