It sounds like you got on update via xbox live somehow, because after the update many things changed in Gears 2, so if you somehow got an xbox live update that would be the case.

@mrmowthemdown You get the golden lancer upon purchasing a collectors edition of Gears of War 2 and inputting the code.
I'm vaguely sure it's on wave 10,20,30,40 and 50 but I haven't played in a long time so i forget
