He was against the industrialization of England and thought there were people screwing the country up - people who advocated the destruction of nature in the name of progress. The rest we know, how the earth was massacred by so called free trade and profit making pioneered by the English and Americans, with the rest of the world following. It was a very angry song.  Nothing to do with patriotism whatsover

I view this song as one of the most beautiful tunes ever written, which expresses the highest emotional love for ones homeland. It expresses LIBERTY and FREEDOM as these terms were originally defined by The Founding Fathers of the USA. Socialism will imprison as sure as feudalism.
