This is a optically controlled D.I.Y. Stereo Synth which converts changes in light on a T.V./monitor into strange ring modulated square waves.

  • hey whats that video that your using...looks really dope

  • Thanks, I actually made the video myself just to play the instrument. It's clips of fractals etc. all edited up.

  • Nah, I never drilled into the monitor or anything. The photocels are acually mounted inside suction cups which I then resealed and painted black. The whole device can almost fit in your pocket, and can be attached to any screen. Its kinda neat sticking them to my P.C. and then opening a bunch of video windows and moving them around.

  • Thanks guys! The unfortunate part is that the audio gets turned to mono during the youtube conversion. You sould here it in true stereo. The two sensors on the left go to left channel and right to right so you actually get all kinds of wierd pitch/panning kinda effects. I'll have to post an stereo audio track somewhere soon.

  • sweet jesus... first whats that video? second, can you make me a music video with the tech? i guess i would have to reverse engineer it all... this is radtastic. to quote robert moog " when electronic music began it was the province of the academic community"... now it's noise.

  • When i read the title i thought i would be like that! Damn why didnt i think of that :D

  • Absolutely Amazing!

Damn why didn't I think of that, I already had the idea of using a bunch of fotocells controlled by shadows/sunlight, but I never thought of using a TV. The video is great (I want a copy :P) and I wonder what circuit you used to create the sound/noize, 555's ? (I want a copy :P)

I can only give a 5 star rating max, so that's what I'll give you, but it's worth more, eXcellent job!

  • dope shit bro.....what vid editing program you use? fcp?

  • amazing!!

  • very nice work.
