@funkmike Wow racist person of color. How very unclassy. I bet you will be happy in Africa or some other place of color.

I was born in '54. I remember older children walking with braces and special shoes who had been stricken with polio. People were very scared for their children in the summer up until the mid-50's

@Cris43130 I think about it every day-but I know what you are talking about and I am very happy that people today don't have to think about it much anymore.

Block was fired around this time. You can see Daly frown when Block asks Truman if she'd like to go out after the show. But it seems so tame by today's standards.

I agree about Bloch. He was very forward and wolfish but that was a common style back then. I think he could have been worked with but it's also clear Daly did not like him and probably encouraged the producers to push him overboard, which they did.

Hal Block couldn't have been all that bad. Maybe he was a bit strange, but he made the connection between Mamie Eisenhower and the fact that she performed on records. Pretty good guess in my book.

Agree with an earlier post--Daly seemed to dislike Hal Block intensely. Clearly Block was rather vulgar and Mr. Daly quite the opposite. But I agree that Block's questions, although lacking grace, were provocative and, in this case, led to identifying Ms. Truman.

And promoting the March of Dimes, which did much to work to make polio a disease people don't even think about any more.
Thanx for posting this gem. This is classic. Arlene in a tiara yet. Hal Block asking Ms. Truman are you adorable, or a disease, or Mamie Eisenhower, or in her 40s. (That memorable glare at 2:11 could kill at 40 paces.) Various YouTube clips illustrate Block played the game well, was amusing, and set up interesting tensions in the game. A shame that he and Gil Fates did not quite get along. Kilgallen rules. For sophisticated classy entertainment, WML still delivers even now.

In today's world, i could image a tv host saying to britney spears or paris hilton, "would you care to share with us a conviction?" and have it mean something else entirely.
