On December 12, 2010 around 6:00 PM a fire broke out in a compost facility alongside Hellman Avenue in Chino, CA. The property is filled with 2 massive 25" green waste compost piles which have been burning for hours as crews use heavy machinery to try and control the blaze. By 11AM on December 12, 2010 the blaze had already burned 5 acres and firefighters expected to have the fire under control by late Monday evening as mild Santa Ana winds and low humidity helps fuel the flames. The cause of ignition is still under investigation, however as of now the crews believe the blaze was intentionally lit.

  • This is interesting because it seems to just be smoldering. I didn't see any real flames coming out of the piles.

  • @StormChaseChicago Yeah, it's all green waste that is pretty dense so it made for a slow burning fire. The density of the compost allowed the crews to douse the tops of the piles, but the water was unable to penetrate any further because of the material that the mounds were composed of.

But even after I had left (around 1pm) the fire continued to burn for another 5 hours or so before being extinguished.

  • Fantastic job filming this Sean! Really shows the aftermath left over from the fire. Very sad to see though. Some people have no morals these days. Sorry about the fire in your area that wasn't necessary at all.

  • @NathanWithrow Thanks so much my friend!! It's insane someone would light a fire for their own pleasure...Destroys hundreds of family's lives every season here. Fortunately no one was injured, killed, or suffered any property loss here.

    Thanks again man!!

  • Hi, Sean ! Very god and interesting video.

It is very bad if the fire was intentionally lit, especially if this is a toxic waste storage.

Sorry to hear about this bad happened .

  • @ExtremeSpinner99 Thanks so much my friend!! : )

It is terrible that someone would light a fire intentionally like this...unfortunately this happens quite a bit. I'm not sure exactly what other compounds were in some of the compost piles, but later that evening after filming and all day yesterday I had a bad sore throat! Must have been the smoke that I inhaled that day as I was right in the thick of it...But it's much better now and I think it was worth it overall!

    Thanks again! : )

  • @Mesocyclone33 Yeah...while it's a real stupid and terrible crime to commit, they sure did pick a good place to light it...Smells terrible!! Lol!

  • @JazzyL8888 Thanks so much Jazzy!!

I'm actually not positive as to when they gained full control as most of the news stations have stopped covering the event, but the smell is now gone so it looks like it may be out! Lol!!

  • @CaStormChaser Yea seems like it would be arson unfortunately...

  • You did a great job of filming this Sean . Did they have it under control last night ?

This sure was a significant fire . I am glad the winds weren't any higher than they already were .
