The Tipperary side of Lough Derg contains many disused slate quarries. This farmhouse sits on the edge of such a quarry, and was built from its stone. Almost everything around it, from walls to sheds to the roads, is fashioned from the same quarry stone. The heavy slate slabs sit on top of one another without the use of mortar.

  • I know this well. My cousin Paddy Flannery has the farm across the road. You can see the white hay barn and the fir trees near the end of the video.

The little lane is called Townlough Lane and it runs between Lough Derg Way and the Portroe-Ballina Road.

  • @joannhinz I know that barn! Thanks for the info re the office for the slate quarry!

  • What townland is this in? Cant tell from the map. Killoran or Corbally? A lot of people from these districts emigrated to Vermont to work as slatemakers, quarrymen.

  • @pead Hi there. This appears to be between Townlough Upper and Coolbaun, directly west of Killoran and Corbally. I've sent you an OSI link but it won't let me place it here. For the record it's the OSI map browser with these coordinates: #V1,573436,678318,6,9

  • Hi, in response to your observation that most old homes are built of limestone blocks and this is slate--the home was actually an office for a slate quarry. That's why it is built of slate, available right on site.

  • No, it is Townlough Upper, near the Cloneybrien line. It was the office for the disused slate quarry and belonged to the Mahar family. Black Jack Mahar (who never washed) was the Bogeyman of my cousins' childhood. It's a 19th century house. Those made of slate usually are. Earlier homes are made of stone. You can see the streaks of iron ore in the slates.

  • That's a great find, the video is very atmospheric with the wind rustling through the trees. So the entire house is built from blocks of slate? I've never seen that before, the old houses are all built from limestone usually. It looks like a very old dwelling.
