i think you already have a wifi signal in ur area without doing this trick, that because it's "working". But i don't have a wifi signal and with this method i don't get any new one...
I tried it. It does work. But you don't even need the cell phone. Just plug an ethernet cable in and move the other end around the room until you get a stronger signal. It's like a makeshift antenna. It only slightly improved my signal, wrapping around the cell phone only made it worse because the chord was shorter.

The signal strength is something in ur router not in ur pc.
and ethernet is a complete different protecoil than wireless.
